Dr Free Gift & BOGO

Overview of the Dr Free Gift, BOGO Buy X Get Y Shopify App and its features

APP SETUP

Introduction

Shopify does not have a built in solution to allow you to automatically give gifts to customers who meet certain goals. To solve this, we created the Dr. Free Gift Shopify app.

Dr. Free Gift makes it simple to create free products that are automatically added to or removed from a customer’s cart based on the conditions—or goals—you configure.

Unlike Shopify’s standard discount system, this app doesn’t rely on traditional discounts to make gifts free. To avoid the limitations of that system, it uses dedicated products exclusively as gifts, each with a price set to zero. Dr. Free Gift ensures customers can only receive these gifts once they’ve achieved the specific goals you’ve defined.

How to award gifts to customers who spend more

Dr. Free Gift offers flexible ways to reward your customers with free products:

1. Automatic Gift Awards:
In the simplest setup, pre-defined gift products (including their variants) are automatically added to the customer’s cart when they meet a goal. Customers can immediately see the gift(s) in their cart and, if multiple variants are available, they can select a different variant while reviewing their cart.

2. Gift Choice Options:
Alternatively, you can configure the goal to let customers choose their gifts upon reaching a goal. Customers can select from the available products and variants, limited to the number of gifts you’ve allowed.

3. Gift Decline and Re-add:
Both automatic and manual gift options allow customers to decline any gift. Once declined, the gift is removed from the cart but can be added back if the customer changes their mind.

4. Inventory Management for Gifts:
Since gift products are separate from regular-priced products, you may need to synchronize inventory between the two. Dr. Free Gift includes a minimal inventory sync feature, which works for single-variant gifts and main products from a single inventory location.

For multi-variant gifts or shops with multiple warehouse locations, a full-scale inventory management app might be necessary. While we don’t have a specific app recommendation, you can explore various options in the Shopify App Store.

Configuring goals which award gifts

Dr. Free Gift provides versatile goal-setting options to determine when free gifts are awarded.

Types of Goals:

  • Minimum Subtotal or Item Count: Gifts can be awarded based on a minimum cart subtotal or the number of items in the cart.
  • Discount-Based Goals: Gifts can be triggered when a specific discount is applied.

Customizing Goal Criteria:

  • Define which products count toward the subtotal or item count by including or excluding specific variants, products, or entire collections.
  • Use the global exclusion list to ensure certain products are never counted toward any goal.

Setting Limits and Tiered Rewards:

Goals can include maximum thresholds, enabling tiered rewards.

For example:

Goal A: Award a smaller gift for orders between $50 and $100.
Goal B: Award a larger gift for orders over $100.
This ensures customers receive one gift at most, with better rewards for higher spending.

Free shipping tier goals

Goals can be used to highlight free shipping tiers you’ve configured in Shopify or your shipping carrier app. For instance, if free shipping applies to orders over $50, the app can remind customers to increase their cart value to qualify. However, the free shipping configuration itself must be set up in Shopify or your shipping app.

Discount award goals

You can configure goals to automatically apply a discount when a customer meets certain criteria. For example:

Apply a free shipping code, a dollar-off code, or a Buy X Get Y code for orders over $50.
Once the goal is reached, the app signals Shopify to apply the discount at checkout. Some themes may display the discount in the cart. For real-time discount visibility, use our Dr. Stacked Discounts app, which ensures discounts appear before checkout.

International and scheduled goals

Configure goals to apply only to visitors from specific countries, determined by their IP address.

Schedule goals to start or end at a specific date and time for time-sensitive promotions.

Widgets to Promote Goals to Customers

Dr. Free Gift includes features to help you effectively promote your goals, ensuring customers are always aware of the incentives available for spending more.

1. Progress Bar Widget:
The progress bar widget can be added anywhere on your shop’s pages to display eligible goals in a visually engaging way.

The progress bar aligns with the metric of the goals (e.g., subtotal or item count).
If both count-based and subtotal-based goals are active, only one set of goals will appear on the progress bar.

Ideal placement includes the cart page, drawer cart, or product pages near the “Add to Cart” button for maximum visibility.

2. Floating Gift Widget:
The floating gift widget provides another way to notify customers about available goals.

A small gift icon floats in a configured location on your shop’s interface.
On hover or click, it can reveal a slider showcasing all goals or open a larger modal with detailed information about the rewards.

Both widgets ensure your customers stay informed about incentives, encouraging them to meet your configured goals and boosting engagement.
